Equine ICSI: From Science to Sport

Broadcast live from Twemlows Stud Farm, the webinar will take viewers behind the scenes of equine ICSI, following the journey from the mare and oocyte through to the laboratory, embryo and ultimately the sport horse.

This won't simply be a discussion about what ICSI is. We want breeders to see the process, understand the science and hear directly from the people working with these technologies every day.

What is equine ICSI?

ICSI, or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, is an advanced assisted reproduction technique in which an individual sperm cell is injected directly into a mature oocyte.

Combined with OPU (Ovum Pick-Up), ICSI is creating new possibilities for breeders, particularly when working with valuable mare genetics, competition mares, older or subfertile mares, and limited or valuable stallion semen.

During the webinar, we will explore not only how the process works, but also the practical decisions breeders need to consider.

Go behind the scenes of the ICSI journey

Throughout the evening, we will move around Twemlows Stud Farm and connect live with specialists across Europe and the USA.

The programme will explore mare scanning, OPU, oocyte retrieval and ICSI, alongside some of the rapidly developing areas surrounding assisted reproduction.

We will also look at genetic salvage following the loss of a mare, including the recovery of oocytes from ovaries and how valuable female genetics may potentially be preserved.

From there, we'll follow the journey towards the specialist laboratory and explore how science is opening new opportunities in embryo production, sexed semen, cloning and genetic preservation.

Meet our international panel

Hosting the evening will be Tullis Matson of Stallion AI Services, alongside Edward Matson, Dr Monica Morganti and Dr Rebecca Keating from Twemlows Stud Farm, who will take viewers through the practical mare, veterinary and OPU elements of the process.

Joining live from Italy will be Professor Cesare Galli and Dr Giovanna Lazzari of Avantea, internationally recognised specialists in assisted reproductive technologies.

Professor Galli has been at the forefront of reproductive biotechnology for decades, with achievements including the world's first equine clone in 2003. Together with Dr Lazzari, he will explore the development of ICSI, the science taking place within the laboratory and where the technology could take equine breeding in the future.

Klaas De Coster of Mares of Macha, Belgium, will bring an important breeder and commercial perspective to the discussion, exploring how access to exceptional female families and proven mare genetics is changing.

From the USA, Dr Lexie Russell will join us to discuss areas including sexed semen, cloning and genetic preservation, bringing another international perspective to the evening.

What does ICSI mean for stallion genetics?

The mare is only one side of the equation.

Tullis will also explore the stallion side of ICSI, including semen frozen specifically for ICSI, dedicated ICSI straws and how the technology can help breeders make more efficient use of particularly valuable, rare or limited semen.

With oocytes and semen increasingly moving between specialist centres internationally, planning where genetics are stored and how they can be accessed is becoming an important part of modern breeding.

From the laboratory to international sport

Ultimately, breeding technology has to be considered in the context of the horses it produces.

As the first generations of ICSI-bred horses progress through the age groups and into higher levels of competition, we are beginning to see the technology move from science into sport.

During the webinar, we'll look at horses produced through ICSI that are now emerging in competition and ask what these first generations can begin to tell breeders.

We'll also bring our international specialists together to consider the bigger question:
