Chilled Semen Extender Tests
Pre-Season Chilled Semen Extender Testing
Our pre-season chilled semen extender testing service is designed to identify the most suitable semen extender for your stallion ahead of the breeding season. Every stallion responds differently to semen extenders, and pre-season testing helps determine which formulation provides the best sperm longevity, motility, and overall semen quality during chilled storage and transport.
By carrying out extender trials before the breeding season begins, we can assess how your stallion’s semen performs over a monitored chilled period, helping to maximise fertility potential and improve consistency when preparing breeding doses for mares. This allows breeding collections throughout the season to be managed more efficiently and with greater confidence.
During the testing process, semen samples are evaluated using selected extenders and monitored at timed intervals to assess sperm motility and viability during chilling. The results help our laboratory team recommend the most effective extender protocol for your stallion for the upcoming breeding season.
All stallions attending for semen collection or breeding services must be fully health tested and up to date with their six-monthly influenza and tetanus vaccinations. Current negative health certification is required for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA), Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA), Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) nasal swab, and Strangles testing prior to the commencement of the breeding season. These health protocols are essential to help protect the health and biosecurity of all horses on the premises and to maintain the highest breeding standards.
