Flush Out Semen Collection
A pre-season flush-out semen collection is routinely carried out on stallions before the start of the breeding season to help clear residual sperm, seminal plasma, and cellular debris that may have accumulated during the off-season. This process helps stimulate normal reproductive function and allows the reproductive tract to be “cleaned out” prior to commencing semen collections intended for breeding mares.
The flush-out collection is recommended as part of good stud management practice to help optimise semen quality and consistency ahead of the season. By performing one or more preliminary collections, the stallion’s sperm output, motility, and overall reproductive readiness can be assessed before breeding doses are prepared for mares.
This procedure is commonly advised before the first official breeding collections of the year to help ensure the stallion is performing at his best and to support the highest possible semen quality for the upcoming season.
All stallions attending for semen collection or breeding services must be fully health tested and up to date with their six-monthly influenza and tetanus vaccinations. Current negative health certification is required for Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA), Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA), Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) nasal swab, and Strangles testing prior to the commencement of the breeding season. These health protocols are essential to help protect the health and biosecurity of all horses on the premises and to maintain the highest breeding standards.
