What is Equine Cloning?

Equine cloning is the process of creating a foal that is an identical genetic twin of your horse. It starts with a small skin sample taken by your vet. From this, Gemini Genetics’ specialist laboratory team can grow and cryopreserve living cells in liquid nitrogen at -196°C. These cells can be stored long-term, keeping your horse’s genetics protected until you decide to proceed with cloning. Through Gemini’s partnership with ViaGen Pets & Equine—a world leader in animal cloning—your horse’s unique genetics can be safeguarded for the future.

Why Consider Cloning Your Horse?

  • Take the Guesswork Out of Breeding: Improved predictability of offspring.
  • Maintain Elite Bloodlines: Secure valuable genetics of top-performing horses, ensuring their traits continue in future breeding programs. Many top breeders are already doing this.
  • Breed from Geldings: Cloning allows reproduction of genetically identical stallions from geldings, providing new breeding opportunities.
  • Genetic Insurance: Secure a genetic copy of your horse in case of injury or unexpected loss.
  • Advance Breeding Programmes: Enhance your breeding strategies with access to proven genetics.
  • Preserve Rare Breeds: Contribute to the conservation of endangered equine breeds by improving genetic diversity.

The Equine Cloning Process

Cloning your horse is a straightforward procedure:

  1. Skin Sample Collection: A skin sample is collected from your horse via a procedure that must be performed by your veterinarian. This is usually a post-mortem procedure where a 2cm x 2cm snip of ear tissue as well as 4x 6mm biopsy punches from the crest of the neck are submitted. Live sample taking may be available at the discretion of your veterinarian. For live sample taking, 4x 6mm biopsy punches from the crest of the neck are submitted upon veterinary approval.
  2. Genetic Preservation: The skin sample is processed and preserved in Gemini Genetics' state-of-the-art UK laboratory.
  3. Cell Culture: Upon request, cells within the submitted skin sample are asked to grow and replicate, testing the viability of the sample and preparing the sample for future cloning.
  4. Indefinite Storage: Preserved skin samples and cultured cells, as applicable, are stored in secure, alarmed liquid nitrogen tanks, meaning there is no pressure to decide to clone your horse immediately.
  5. Cloning Procedure: When you're ready, the preserved genetic material is sent to ViaGen Pets & Equine to complete the cloning process which includes:
    • Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) – The nucleus of your horse’s skin cell is transferred into a donor egg.
    • Embryo Development & Implantation – The embryo is matured in a laboratory and implanted into a surrogate mare.
    • Healthy Foal Birth – A genetically identical foal is born with exactly the same DNA as the original horse.

All foals are born at ViaGen Pets & Equine in Texas, USA and stay with the surrogate mother until weaning.

FAQs

My horse has died, can I still preserve their DNA?

If your horse has passed away, there is a limited window (5 days) in which a tissue sample can still be collected for cloning. Samples must arrive at the laboratory within 5 days of taking in a chilled (not frozen) state. This is paramount for sample viability.

Does cloning create an exact replica of my horse’s personality and abilities?

While genetics play a significant role in physical traits and potential, a horse’s training, environment, and experiences also shape its development. Cloning ensures genetic replication, but environmental factors will still influence the horse's personality and skill.

Can I breed with a cloned horse?

Yes, cloned horses can breed naturally and pass on their genetics like any other horse. They are fully functional stallions or mares, depending on the original horse’s sex.

Can I change the sex of my cloned horse?

No, this technology is not available currently.

How long does the cloning process take?

Horse cloning on average takes 18 months to 2 years. From samples being taken to birth of the cloned foal. This is largely because the horse gestation period alone is just over 11 months. Once born, foals need to stay with the surrogate mum until at least 6 months of age.

Can a cloned horse be registered for competition?

Yes, many equestrian organizations, including FEI, allow cloned horses to compete. Cloned horses on the competition circuit have proven to be achieving highly, just as their predecessors did.

Do Gemini Genetics only offer horse cloning services?

No, Gemini Genetics also provides genetic preservation services for cats and dogs, as well as horses.

How long can I store the samples for?

Skin samples stored with Gemini Genetics can be stored indefinitely in liquid nitrogen, so there is no pressure to decide to clone immediately.
